I went to the Western Digital website and downloaded the firmware updater. Would like to hear from anyone who can help. This problem started after I upgraded to the initial version of High Sierra. I swapped the USB cable on this drive, and the problem went away for a while, but now it's back. One drive ( My Book 1230 3TB) in particular drops out a lot. I bought the Manhattan because the older 10 port hub I was using was doing this same trick, so I know it is not the hub. I am using a Manhattan 28 port self-powered hub. In most cases, the drive reboots itself fairly quickly, but in one case, I had to pull the power adapter plug from the rear of the drive, wait a coupla minutes and replug, and the drive came back up. External WD USB drives randomly disconnect, and I am given the alert re: improper disconnect. The Monthly CCC backup stays in a different location and only gets connected maybe once a month ![]() The Weekly CCC backup stays in the FireSafe and only gets connected once a week ![]() The Daily CCC backup stays connected 24-7 Personally I use TimeMachine and CCC for Daily, Weekly and Monthly backups. Another option is to only connect up the #3 CCC and #5 SD drives one at a time while your actually doing a backup. I would try a different self-powered Hub. I would start by removing one of the 3, 4, or 5 drives and then run for a period of time until I could isolate which drive is causing the problem. or that all 3 drives togeather are overloading the Mac's port. one of the (3, 4 or 5) drives has a bad cable or enclosure.Ģ. (non-power hubs generally only support two bus powered drives)Īt this point I'm guessing, but it sounds likeġ. I can get some work done now, knowing everything is being automatically backed up to my my backup drives. That leaves two USBs free on the Mac, 1 for the keyboard and 1 for syncing my iPhone (I know old fashioned). There is no problem with that as everything plugged into these has its own power source. I have been using these for years as the powered hub left the drives running continuously, even when the Mac was off. I tried all combinations of connecting drives, with and without USB hubs, but still no joy.įinally, I don't know why, I disconnected the Anker 7 way powered USB hub from iMac and power source and voila, all has been working for two days! I had no problem with the hub for over a year, but it seems it was causing a problem now.īecause I have so many USB devices I have to use 2 4-Way Anker USB hubs (passive). I fitted my boot drive which had been in a hub and one of the drives that kept disconnecting, but the problem still remained. ![]() Nice cases, easy to fit drives into and 2amp PSUs as opposed to 1.2amp on WD (should last longer as will be working well below the maximum amperage). I got two of the Orico Aluminium hard drive cases.
